Tales from a Web Librarian

LILRC Annual Meeting

I attended the LILRC Annual Meeting on June 20th at the beautiful Farmingdale Public Library. LILRC (Long Island Library Resources Council) is a local organization for public, special, and academic librarians on Long Island that helps keep everyone in touch and up-to-date on what's going on around town!

The morning's keynote was given by Rebecca T. Miller, editorial director for Library Journal & SLJ. Ms. Miller's talk focused on how we should shape and build better leaders within the library. She addressed common workplace challenges such as retention and promotion, strategic staff planning, and redefining core roles. Ms. Miller stressed the importance of breaking down departmental barriers to larger, administration roles and encouraged everyone to support the natural evolution of libraries.

A series of lightning round presentations followed, with 7 presenters from Long Island libraries (2 from Stony Brook University Libraries!). The presentations ranged from open access policies, to addressing gender biases, to how to development a major fundraiser.
