Children's Literature Fellows Program

Last week I completed the Children's Literature Fellows program, receiving my MFA Advanced Certificate in Creative Writing from Stony Brook Southampton. The year-long program was a wonderful experience and I learned a great deal about the craft of writing picture books from seasoned picture book writers. With guidance and feedback from Amy Sklansky and Heidi Stemple, I completed two polished manuscripts and a draft of a third story. Throughout the program, Emma Walton Hamilton provided invaluable direction on everything from character voice and plot, to querying and publishing.

As a special treat, each of the 9 fellows were able to read a portion of their story in last week's closing ceremony. I was incredibly proud to share my story Ansel Ant (complete with voices and all!) and hear the audience laugh and 'aww' at every page turn.

I'm continuing to write (and revise) using the knowledge and tools I've acquired from the program and I'm looking forward starting my career as a picture book author!
